Abstract:
Management of population health risk levels by measuring radiation dose equivalents at the location of nuclear facilities Ivan Lasić1,3 Vesna Radumilo2,5, Dražan Primorac3,4, Aco Janićijević4, 1Faculty of health studies, University of Mostar, 2Nuclear Facilities of Serbia, 3State regulatory agency for radiation and nuclear safety 4University Department of Transport and Logistics, University of Mostar, 5Institute for accreditation of B&H 6Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade Abstract: The increased degree of risk to the population and other biosystems and, in general, a negative and potentially harmful impact on the environment in the vicinity of nuclear facilities from artificial sources of radiation, is a very current task and security challenge. That is why the characteristic parameters of the ambient environment in the surroundings of such facilities are permanently monitored and reliable measurements are carried out in the sense of monitoring the fulfillment of the safety conditions of the operation of nuclear facilities. If deviations from the standard and expected results are registered during the regular operating regime of nuclear facilities, in accordance with the law on radiation and nuclear safety and security and the rulebook on the limits of exposure to ionizing radiation and measurements to assess the level of exposure to ionizing radiation, prescribed measures are taken to prevent an increase in risk and timely prevention of a possible accident. One such responsible and comprehensive concept of safety risk management of this kind requires a systematic examination of radioactivity in the environment in the vicinity of nuclear facilities. This includes, among other things, the examination of the level of radioactive contamination of the air by continuous measurement of the strength of the ambient dose equivalent of gamma radiation in the air, measurement of meteorological parameters as well as mathematical modeling of the distribution of radionuclides in the boundary layer of the atmosphere. Examination of the level of radioactive air contamination by continuous measurement of the strength of the ambient dose equivalent of gamma radiation in the air in the vicinity of nuclear facilities was carried out and presented in this paper. The planned measurements were carried out by an accredited method in accordance with the requirements for the competence of testing laboratories according to the standard SRPS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (Testing the level of radioactive air contamination by continuous measurement of the strength of the ambient dose equivalent: EPA HASL 300:1997) Key words: nuclear facilities, control of safety conditions, risk levels, ambient dose equivalent, air contamination.
